Tharoxine testing helps diagnose thyroid disorders. The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland located near the throat. The thyroid gland creates hormones that regulate the way your body uses energy. These hormones also play an important role in regulating weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and mood. Thyroid hormone, also known as T4, is a type of thyroid hormone. This test measures the level of T4 in the blood. Too much or too little of T4 can indicate a thyroid disease.

Thyroxine comes in two forms:

Free thyroxine (Free T4): Enters body tissues when needed.

Related thyroxine (T4) is associated with proteins and prevents it from entering body tissues.

The test that measures t4 is called free and associated with a total T4 test. It is worth noting that other tests only measure free T4. A free T4 test is more accurate than a total T4 test to check for thyroid function.

Changes in the thyroid gland can occur during pregnancy. These changes are usually not important, but some women may develop thyroid disease during pregnancy.  Hyperthyroidism occurs in one in every 500 pregnancies, while hypothyroidism occurs in approximately one in 250 pregnancies.

Hyperthyroidism, often hypothyroidism, may remain after pregnancy. If you have a thyroid disease during pregnancy, your doctor will monitor your condition after birth. If you have a history of thyroid disease, be sure to talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or considering pregnancy.

Reasons for the examination

Thyroid disease is more common in women and often occurs under the age of 40, and is a genetic disease. You may need a tharoxine test if a family member has thyroid disease or if you have symptoms of too much thyroid hormone in your blood, a condition called hyperthyroidism, or symptoms of hypothyroidism, a condition called hypothyroidism.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

  • Concern.
  • Weight loss.
  • Trembling hands.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Bulge throughout the body.
  • Bulging eyes.
  • Sleep problems.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Weight gain.
  • Fatigue and general weakness.
  • Hair loss.
  • Inability to withstand cold temperatures.
  • Irregular menstrual cycle.
  • Constipation.

How the test is performed

During the test, a laboratory specialist takes a blood sample from one of the veins in your arm using a small needle. After the needle is inserted into the vein, a small amount of blood will be collected in the test tube for later analysis in the laboratory using special devices. It should be remembered that this test takes no more than five minutes, during which you will only feel a small tingling when the needle is inserted into and removed from the vein.

How the patient is preparing for the test

This analysis does not require any special equipment. If your doctor has asked for further tests on the withdrawal blood sample, you may need to be healthy and drinking for several hours before the analysis. Your doctor will tell you what special instructions you may need to follow before you perform the analysis.

Risks of screening

There is very little risk of this analysis, as you will feel a tingling, a slight pain or mild bruising where the blood sample is removed that disappears during days and there is no risk.

Interpretation of the results of the examination

-Results may come in the form of total T4, Free T4, or Free T4 content.

Free T4 content is a formula that compares free thyroxine and associated thyroxine.

High levels of any of these tests indicate hyperthyroidism.

Low levels of any of these tests indicate hypothyroidism.

If the Results of the T4 test are not normal, your doctor will likely order more thyroid tests to help with the diagnosis. These may include:

  • Thyroid hormone Test T3: another hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid hormone Test TSH: A pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce T4 and T3 hormones.
  • Tests to diagnose Graves’ disease: an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism.
  • Tests to diagnose hashimoitis: an autoimmune disease that causes hypothyroidism.
